World Cup #2: Downhill, 4-X, Cross Country June 1, 2003 Fort William, United Kingdom
The second World Cup stop at Fort William, Scotland brought huge crowds and daring performances
to the Nevis Range.
In the 4-cross event under cloudy skies and in front of 6000 spectators, Greg Minaar of Russia took first while USA's Eric Carter came second and Steve Peat of Great Britain took third. On the women's side, Australia's Katrina Miller came out on top, trailed by Moi Suemasa of Japan and Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands. Current World Champion Steve Peat (UK) suffered an injury during the race.
In the Cross Country race on the second day, 152 men vied for bragging rights with Belgian Filip Meirhaege taking first, followed by German Lado Fumic and Julien Absalon of France. On the women's side, Rita Dahle outrode 83 women for the title. Sabine Spitz of Germany came second with Barbara Blatter of Switzerland taking third.
The third day featured the exciting downhill on a 2.6k course. French riders ruled the day in both
men's and women's races while Steve Peat hung on for 19th place despite an injury. On the men's
side, Cedric Gracia grabbed top honors with Mickael Pascal of France coming in second and Austrian
Nathan Rennie taking third. Celine Gros won the women's division followed by countrywomen Sabrina
Jonnier and Emmeline Ragot.
2002 Fort Williams champ Tracy Moseley of Great Britain came in a disappointing fourth place. "The course was drier and rougher than last year so you were hitting the bumps harder and faster. I just wasn't fast enough to win".
