World Cup #3: Downhill, 4-X June 8, 2003 Alpe d Huez, France
The UCI World Cup made its third stop at Alpe d Huez, France for round two of the 4X and
downhill events. Nestled the Osian mountains, the course is famous for its 21 switchbacks.
Despite sunny skies all week during practice, rain fell at the start of the 4X finals, making for a muddy crash course with many victims. On the men's side, Eric Carter of USA took the top spot, followed by Czech's Michael Prokop and Great Britain's Scott Beaumont. In the women's race, Tracey Moseley of Great Britain snatched the gold, ahead of Austria's Katrina Miller and France's Sabrina Jonnier. On Sunday, the sun showed up for the downhill event. On a high-speed course, Nathan Rennie of Austria ruled the day, winning the gold. Countryman Christopher Kovarik came second and France's Fabien Barel took third. In the women's event, World Champion Anne-Caroline Chausson showed her winning form and placed first. Tracey Moseley took second while France's Celine Gros rounded out the podium with third.
