knee news

this just in. got in to see my wonderful dr steven hughes, who didn't really have much to work with since i'd been icing so often the injury had calmed down (and it generally doesn't hurt when i walk). he did say he doesn't think it's a "static" injury, meaning not ligaments or meniscus. it's a dynamic issue he thought. this is good news i guess.today i got out and rode 103 miles on the road bike.. it felt great. i would even venture to say it felt easy. which was exciting for me. never felt tired, no aches or issues, no underlying feeling that "this sucks". it didn't hurt to have justin join me for the first few hours. the time always passes so much faster when there is good conversation. i averaged about 16mph on the ride, which is ok for me at this point in the season and being injured. the rain held off until about mile 65, the pain held off until about mile 88 and then it f'in killed! i suppose i won't ride or run for this week. and next week when i start riding again i'll keep the long ride to under 85 miles. hopefully paddling, yoga and weight lifting can entertain me training wise... we'll see. time to ice this thing.

** two days after this ride - it still hurts. this is depressing... i'm off to paddle **

not the knee but trigger points in the quads?? Have you tried this yet Matt?

feel around the quad when loose (dig deep with your thumbs) all the way up to the hip and if you have sore points work them out and the knee will be fine!

or you can keep icing the knee but I would massage the Triggers out of the quads.

my knee was swollen in January and I was pissed because I didn't twist it or anything major like that but it was getting worse & I iced , and iced...then I learned all about the trigger points and worked my quads and my knee is fine and has been...when it does get a little freaky on me I work my quads more and it goes away...

hope that helps Matt,

check out this great book for $20 that I bought, with illustrations and has been so key for me,,, I was feeling my Achilles tendon a bit out of whack and it was from a trigger point in the MIDDLE of my calf... once I dug in and worked on it, my Achilles felt so much better... that book says that most aches and pains DON'T COME from where the Pain is felt, so TRUE!

go look at this site www.triggerpointbook.com ... I am all about tools for self-help recovery, this one is awesome.

Step ON,

Bob

yes i had knee surgery in 2004 for a torn medial meniscus (inside) in that knee. the surgery scars are long gone and were very small. that scars you see are the ones from the high speed mtn biking crash i took on feb 17th. i think that is what hurt my knee. it's been over a month. feels good today but i haven't run for almost two weeks now and i haven't ridden for a week. hopefully the time off has helped.
