The End

"I was sitting in a stream for like 10 or 15 seconds, then remembered I was in a race."
-Tracy Moseley, describing her seeding run just moments before winning the final.

British racing fans are amongst the best in the world. The Belgians are more rowdy and the Japanese more enthusiastic while the Brits are more polite, but these countries put the rest of the world to shame as mountain bike spectators. And they came out in droves on Saturday, a good six hours before the 4X finals.

Number of DNFs in Sunday's DH finals: 0

"I've been dreaming of winning a World Cup for 12 months now."
-Tracy Moseley, after her win.

"Not bad for having my arm in a cast for the past six weeks!"
-Vanessa Quin, reminding us of her injury.

"First, in Kaprun, I felt sick and nervous then at Mount Sainte-Anne it happened again, then again at Vail. Right now I feel really nervous."
-Greg Minnaar, on the gondola ride up to his final run. Rather than parlay that nervous energy into a podium as in Kaprun, MSA and Vail, he crashed hard.

"9x" -a small decal on the helmet of Nicolas Vouilloz reminding you how many times he's won Worlds.

Downhill's Top Trade Team is Global Racing, followed closely by Haro/Lee Dungarees. "And we're so much smaller!" asserted Haro team manager Mike King, adding "they should only count the top-two finishes."

Team Global Racing continued its tradition of throwing a small party for fellow teams and insiders at its tent Saturday evening. This week the theme was South African in honor of Greg Minnaar. Beers, lamb, rice dishes and sausages fed a who's who crowd of riders.

Progressive Shocks' well-received new 5th Element rear shock is making an impact on the DH circuit this year. We spoke to UK distributor Tim Flooks (formerly of Euro RockShox fame) who said he can't keep them in stock. It seems the small company is making huge inroads in the market, with several teams - including Intense, Haro/Lee Dungarees, Be-One, Giant and Fiat/Rotwild running Progressive's shock.

Fox still owns the lion's share of rear shocks on race bikes outfitting teams such as Volvo-Cannondale and Maxxis USA. Fox has a new shock called the "Intensifier," which utilizes a huge external reservoir.

Tomac repping Kenda? We hear Johnny T. is a spokesperson for Kenda Tires. But after a 17-year relationship, Tioga's marketing folks would remind you that he only won championships on their tire.

Speaking of Tioga, they say the DH tire of choice for their sponsored riders is the 2.5 White Tiger. If you can get their rep to custom cut it to your racecourse, then you're really styling. Typically riders will use one set for practice and another for qualifying and finals.

So many spectators showed up Saturday that the double-decker shuttle bus was hours behind taking them back to their cars. Organizers resorted to calling every taxi company in town to alleviate the wait.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU: Wade Bootes (AUS, Trek-Volkswagen), Kirt Voreis (USA, Haro/Lee Dungarees), Scott Beaumont (GBR, Kona), Nathan Rennie (AUS, Yeti/Pearl Izumi) and Emily Horridge (GBR) celebrated birthdays this weekend.

"I smashed my balls so hard!"
-Cedric Gracia, after knocking his jumblies during his final run.
